The Latino Initiative is a plan whereby Latino students in the United States may be able to overcome the barriers that keep them from achieving their highest potential. One of the major specific goals of the Initiative is to remove hurdles that inhibit Latino students from graduating from high school, and from achieving advanced education, such as university or trade school.
We know that there are many factors that inhibit Latino youth from achieving these goals, even though most of Latino youth realize the importance of advance education in their lives. Thus we have divided the Latino Initiative into four campaigns:
The Student Campaign,
The Parent Campaign,
The Community Campaign, and
The Educator Campaign.
You can read the entire document: The Latino Initiative, or you can focus on the areaof your greatest interest by reading the excerpt of one of the four campaigns noted above. We know that these document s are not the entire solution, but they are a beginning and a place to start thinking. In fact, it was after we wrote this Initiative that we began to envision the Diversity Discovery Class, which incorporates all the campaigns. The ultimate goal of Youth Discovery is to close the Achievement Gap and see Latino youth achieve their full potential by becoming educated at least as well as the white majority in America.
For an excellent discussion of the full extent of the Latino Education Crisis see the document: http://www.ascd.org/publications/educational-leadership/feb10/vol67/num05/The-Latino-Education-Crisis.aspx
We believe that by taking Action using the Latino Initiative and the Diversity Discovery Class that we can overcome many of these obstacles.
