Latino Youth Program Model
Discovery is a program of Mount Logan Middle School in Logan, UT and partially supported by YDI. Two teachers have one 3 hour class in the morning and one in the afternoon. Each day one of the teachers takes 6 to 8 students into the outdoors where they study literacy in a natural environment. In addition, the teacher becomes more than a teacher, but in now a mentor and roll model as well. Typically the two classes are composed of 6th graders whose 5th grade teachers estimated them to be the furthest behind. In the first year of Discovery the average increase in reading scores was 2.9 grade levels. See the link below to learn a lot more about Discovery at MLMS
Mount Logan Discovery Sample Student Writing #2: We were in a floating classroom watching the cool, calm water. A Red–Tailed Hawk standing stock still, searches for something to eat. The dogwood and cattails sway in the wind, making it seem as if they are chasing each other. The ripples and serenity made me want to fall asleep, right in this canoe, with the Wellsville Mountains blending into the background.
River Rats and Summer Discovery
Youth Discovery supported and paid for a number of sessions of a program MLMS called River Rats and later changed the name to ‘Summer Discovery’. The Ford Explorer mentioned in a place or two on the site as purchased for the programs by Multicultural Adventures Outdoors Foundation was the previous name of Youth Discovery Inc.
“It is so serene out here, so unlike the rowdy, noisiness of the classroom. The beauty of the floating classroom takes my breath away. Every time I look down I can see my own reflection. The sky with it’s half moon and wisp of clouds are so much better than the white paint, it sends chills up my spine.”
