Latino Youth Challenge
Latino Youth-Higher Education for 52 Million Americans in the next 35 Years
As we said in Enhancing Latino Education there may be 52 Million American Latino and Latina youth, plus other minorities, that will not get the education they need to realize a middle class income and lifestyle. We do not want that to happen. There are many reasons why these 52 Million American youth will not achieve the education they need to succeed in America. The three major reasons are the “self expectation” of the youth themselves (they simply do not see themselves as university students). The second major reason is money $, they don’t have it and don’t know how to get it. The third reason, as we said in Barriers to Education, is family obligations. But 1) these youth are just as capable as any other youth in America, and 2) there are scholarships available to put them through college if they just are taught where and how to find them. And we think that with education of both youth and parents we can help both to find solutions to the “family obligations.” We think the Self-Discovery Class will answer the majority of these two problems.

We know there are hundreds of organizations out there concerned about Latino youth and doing some great work in their behalf. Nevertheless, we believe that every organization can profit by studying the Latino Initiative and incorporating many of its ideas.
More than that, we believe there are great leaders out there who can accelerate the development and implementation of the Diversity Discovery Class. And, we believe that all your efforts will be stronger by having the class implemented in your schools as well as ours.
